The Democracy Academy, an initiative of the President Kaljulaid Foundation, has appointed Kaisa Tepp as its new project manager as the program enters its third season.
Kaisa, who has a background in human resources in the private sector, said she was drawn to the role by a desire to contribute to mission-driven projects with lasting impact. “Over the years, I’ve taken part in many exciting initiatives myself, and I know the kind of doors they can open for young people,” she said.
In her new position, Kaisa plans to shift the Academy toward a more student-centered, project-based approach. “Young people care deeply about the state of democracy, but they often lack the knowledge and opportunities to take part in discussions on important issues,” she noted. “As a society, we must make sure their voices are heard.”
The Democracy Academy was established to encourage civic engagement among Estonian high school students. It offers ninth- to twelfth-graders the chance to develop leadership and public speaking skills while participating in discussions on politics, media and social issues. The program also provides hands-on project management experience and access to a supportive peer network.
Kaisa said she hopes to bring in students who have not yet found an entry point into civic life. “Encouraging participation, bringing in diverse voices and fostering a transparent culture of discussion are the foundations of a strong democracy,” she said. “And a strong democracy is what helps us navigate through crises.”
Applications for the Academy’s third season will open in the coming weeks.
